How to Use Audio and YouTube as Sources in Google NotebookLM

Google introduced two new sources you can import into Notebook LM, mp3 audio files and YouTube video. In this guide, you will learn how to import and use them.



Pre-requisites

PRE-REQUISITES


Make sure you have an account with Google NotebookLM, which you can get here. You'll also need a link to a YouTube video and an mp3 file to upload.



Let's Begin!

LET'S BEGIN!



 


 [STEP 1]


Navigate to Google NotebookLM.


 [STEP 2]


Click on "+ New Notebook" to create a new notebook.

You should see a pop-up asking you to upload your sources. As you can see below, there are 2 new sources you can add to your notebook, a YouTube video or an mp3 audio file.


At this point, you'll get a pop-up asking you to upload your sources.  You can see below that there are 2 new sources you can add to your notebook, a YouTube video or an mp3 audio file.

Let's add an mp3 audio file. Drag and drop an .mp3 file into "Upload sources", or just click on "Choose File" and select the file you want to upload.

Once it's done uploading, the notebook guide will popup with a summary of your notebook, which at this point only includes the mp3 file. You will also see the mp3 on the left, under sources. Click on that mp3 file you just uploaded.

You will see a full summary of that file, some key topics and the transcription of that audio file.

This file is now in your notebook and ready for you to start using it. Let's move on now to uploading a YouTube file. Let's go ahead and close the summary window by clicking on "X" and then close your notebook guide window by clicking on the "notebook guide" on the bottom right.

Click on "+" next to Sources.

Click on "YouTube" in the "Link" section. Make sure you have a link to a YouTube video you want to import as source, as you will need to paste the URL in the next step.

Paste the URL in the input box. Keep in mind that for now, only the text transcript will be imported. This means that if the YouTube video you are trying to import does not have a transcript, it will not import. Also, the video must be public (not unlisted or private).


Paste the URL and click on "Insert".

Once it's done processing, the Notebook Guide will pop open again. You can close it the same way we did in step  7 . You should now see the new Video under your sources. Click on it to see what it imported.

You see that NotebookLM imported the transcript, created a summary, created some key topics, embedded the video and then displays the full transcript.
